Arqués focused on success under Papas

He’s the mystery ‘foreign midfielder’ Newcastle Jets fans have been waiting to see, and Mario Arqués is determined to repay the faith shown in him with plenty of hard work once he’s out of quarantine.

The Spaniard has spent time playing all around the world such as in Ukraine, India and Malaysia, however the majority of his career has been played in his home country where he was part of the clubs Villarreal, Valencia and Elche FC.

Over that time, Arqués has developed terrific skill in his creative passing and fleet feet on the ball, and he trusts our new Manager, Arthur Papas, will be able to help enhance those abilities even further.

“I had a really exciting conversation with Arthur regarding his interest in signing me to the Jets,” Arqués said.

“The way he wants to play, and the ambition he has, played a key role in deciding to come.

“Honestly, he is a big part of my move to Australia because he has very clear ideas and a style that fits in the way I understand football.

“I’m really thankful for the management of the Club putting their trust in me.”

Arqués will join the almost-completely new Jets squad as soon as he finishes quarantine and he’ll be joining them with an ambitious attitude.

The former La Liga midfielder stated he’s here to be successful and part of a special season.

“I came here to help the team as much as possible and to do important things,” he said.

“We have a very ambitious squad and I think we can achieve big things this year.

“We have to work hard to be at the level of the best teams, and to the delight of the fans.”

Having been part of high quality Clubs before, the 29-year-old central midfielder knows what it takes to compete for trophies.

He’s committed to bringing that mentality to the side and to his individual game.

“My goal is to give 110% every game for the team, and work hard every day to help get the team to the top,” he said.

“If we fight game by game, follow the coach’s ideas and have a very tight group, I’m sure that success will come.

“I’m very excited to be a Newcastle player and to give my everything in the upcoming season. I want to achieve the success that the Club deserves.
