Newcastle Jets are pleased to announce top level defender Matthew Jurman has joined the Club on a two-year-deal.

A member of the Socceroos’ 2018 World Cup squad, Jurman has represented the green and gold on eight occasions and returns to the A-League with great ambition following a season with Greek outfit Xanthi.

“I’m excited for the new challenge,” Jurman said.

“I’m also excited to work with Arthur and play the brand of football he is wanting to implement.

“I’m looking forward to getting back working hard and having a big season. I want to help the team have a successful season and challenge for trophies.”

Born in Wollongong, the centre-back made his A-League debut in 2008 and his international debut for the Socceroos in 2017 against Syria in a 2018 World Cup qualifier.

With a professional career spanning 14 years, the 31-year-old has also played in Europe, Saudi Arabia and South Korea.

Attracting a player with such experience to the Jets is a massive coup for the Club.

Jets Manager, Arthur Papas said; “We’re very pleased to have been able to secure the signature of Matt Jurman.

“Matt has experiences at the highest levels having represented the Socceroos, played in some of Asia’s strongest leagues and only last season plied his trade in Europe.

“Matt’s won championships domestically and having been part of the last World Cup squad. I see no reason why he can’t be part of the next World Cup squad as well. We are delighted to welcome Matt to the Newcastle Jets.”

Formerly with Sydney FC, Brisbane Roar and Western Sydney Wanderers, Jurman joins the Jets with 154 A-League games to his name, across 11 seasons.

Jurman is contracted to the Jets for at least the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons.
