Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets forward Marko Jesic is hopeful of forcing his way into the Jets- match day squad for their Round 1 clash against Adelaide United at Hunter Stadium on October 7.

Jesic said he was doing everything he could at training and in recent trial matches to try and put his hand up for selection in the opening game on the 2012/13 A-League season.

“It-s always in the back of your mind about where you sit within the squad, but it all depends on your form and the way you train,” Jesic said.

“Everyone has been doing really well in training and games so it will be tough to get selected for Round 1.

“Obviously it will come down to what Gary decides but hopefully I can put my hand up to be picked in the (squad of) 15 for Round 1.”

Jesic was hampered by injury at the start of pre-season, but has fully recovered to put in some strong performances in the Jets- pre-season fixtures.

The 23-year-old is refreshed and raring to go after a weekend away with his Jets teammates.

“We had our weekend away and I-m feeling really good and ready to go after that,” he said.

“It-s been a good pre-season. Obviously in the first part I got injured with a quadriceps strain, but I managed to get through that and it-s been good ever since. Hopefully I can continue my form into the season.”

Adding to the already intense competition for places in the Jets- forward line is the recent signing of ex-Liverpool striker Emile Heskey.

But rather than being intimidated by the former England international-s presence, Jesic said he was hoping to strike-up a dangerous partnership up front with Heskey.

“It-s always great to get a big name player, especially in a city with a football culture like Newcastle because the fans appreciate it. I-m sure Emile will do a great job for us,” Jesic said.

“When Bridgey (Michael Bridges) first arrived I learned a few things from him, and when Franny (Jeffers) was here we had a good partnership, so hopefully we can continue on with an Aussie and a Brit and see what happens.

“Depending on the formation we play, it-ll be good running off him. Hopefully we can get the players around him scoring and playing one-twos and things like that, but getting him on the ball will be the most important thing.”

Heskey merchandise is available both ONLINE and at the Hunter Sports Superstore at 294 Turton Road, New Lambton. Stock has not sold out.
