The Newcastle Jets Youth side has defeated Brisbane Roar Youth 1-0 at Ballymore Stadium in Round 8 of the National Youth League competition.

A 77th minute strike by defender Umut Tokdogan was enough to give the visitors a hard-fought victory over their northern rivals.

The Jets initiated much of the attacking play throughout the match, and nearly snatched an early goal through Qantas Young Socceroos starlet James Virgili, who beat a throng of defenders before steering his shot wide of the target.

In the 29th minute, Jason Naidovski nearly broke the deadlock when he beat the offside trap to go one-on-one with Matt Acton in the Roar goal, only for the Brisbane custodian to make a fine save from the ensuing shot.

The home side looked to ignite the contest either side of the half-time break through youngsters Jordan Farina and Adam Sarota, but Jets- shotstopper Neil Young proved unbeatable for the visitors.

Then, 13 minutes from full-time, Naidovski nodded on a cross from the left into the path of Tokdogan who made no mistake from close range to give the Jets a well deserved lead that they would hold for the remainder of the game.

Despite the Roar pushing for a late equaliser, the Jets defence held strong and thwarted the home side at every attempt to claim all three competition points.
