Local Academy players awarded Future Matildas Scholarships

Three current, and one former Newcastle Jets Academy players have recently been chosen as recipients of the inaugural Northern NSW Football Regional Future Matildas Scholarship.

Milan Hammond and Josie Allan both were awardees, as too was Kirsty Fenton, who recently graduated into the A-League Women’s side.

They were selected for the program alongside former Academy player, Mia Bales (Mid North Coast) and fellow Northern NSW players Leia Puxty, Madeline Howard (Adamstown Rosebud) and Elizabeth Fraser (Northern Inland Academy of Sport).

The scholarships will provide financial assistance support from the NSW Government, with a three-year commitment of continuing regional NSW’s fine tradition of developing talented players for our respective national women’s teams.

The contribution will help towards the many expenses that these players and their families need to meet as they continue to train at a high level.

Northern NSW Football Head of Football Peter Haynes said he was delighted to award the scholarships to seven deserving recipients.

“We are now at the stage of the program where we want to provide a small scholarship grant,” Haynes said.

“It is a small gesture as we try to help these fantastic young players on their football journey which hopefully leads to them representing our region at future FIFA Women’s World Cups.

“We hope they go on to have wonderful careers in the game and inspire the next generation of young players coming along throughout northern NSW.”
