Mauragis eyes starting role in Papas’ team

After putting in a run of solid performances towards the end of last season, Lucas Mauragis is continuing to build on his game and push for a starting berth in Arthur Papas’ new-look team.

Mauragis was undeniably a standout in the Jets’ remaining games of the 2020/21 A-League season, with the youngster gaining an assist with his curved delivery from a freekick and scoring a well worked team goal in the Club’s F3 derby win over the Central Coast.

The dynamic left-back sees his form as being a mere glimpse of what he can offer the team for the upcoming campaign.

“I’ve got to make sure I’m on top of my game week in week out so that I can be ready when I’m called upon.” Mauragis said.

Mauragis believes putting in the hard yards on the training ground will get him results when he hits the pitch.

The intensity at training is palpable and Mauragis is pushing himself to reach the levels set out by the Manager.

“Double sessions are really tough,” Mauragis said.

“But I’m acclimatising to these conditions and really enjoying it.”

Newcastle Jets are the first A-League team to return for pre-season and Mauragis didn’t let himself get too comfortable during the break.

“I was taking up my time by the pool and to catch up with my family,” Mauragis said.

“But as soon as it was time to go, I went full steam ahead.”
