Millar eyeing off fiery F3 Derby

The Newcastle Jets will host archrivals the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday evening at McDonald Jones Stadium in what is expected to be a heated clash.

Matthew Millar is coming off an impressive performance in the Jets’ 1-1 draw with Sydney FC and is looking to carry that form into the F3 Derby.

“What happened on the weekend is that we got the structure right,” Millar said.

“We got our timing right.”

At the end of the 2018/19 A-League season, Millar completed a transfer to the Jets from the Mariners and is hoping to get one over his former side.

“It’s always good to play in a derby,” Millar said.

“With the way we’ve been performing lately, we have a lot of confidence coming into this game.”

The F3 derby is one of the most important games on the club’s calendar and Millar is hoping to put a dent in the Mariners’ form.

“We face them twice before the end of the season,” he said.

“So, we can be a big reason why they don’t make finals.”

Despite the Jets having a difficult season, Millar is urging his team to continue pushing and try to avoid a wooden spoon finish.

“We don’t want to end up on the bottom of the ladder,” Millar said.

“It’s something that we have to avoid.”

The 2020/21 A-League season is coming to a close and Millar wants to make the most out of the final rounds.

“We’ve still got 5 weeks,” he said.

“We have to be able to lay a foundation for next season.”
