Football Federation Australia has handed down a four-game suspension to Newcastle Jets defender Tiago Calvano.
Football Federation Australia (FFA) has handed down a four-game suspension to Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets defender Tiago Calvano.
Calvano will miss the remainder of the Jets’ pre-season games, but will be available for round one of the A-League season when the Jets take on Adelaide United at Hunter Stadium on October 7.
Newcastle Jets CEO Robbie Middleby said the Club agreed with the FFA-s stance.
“We support the FFA-s decision and accept the punishment of a four-game suspension for Tiago,” Middleby said.
“As a Club we don-t condone any form of retaliation or violent behaviour.
“The Newcastle Jets is a Club that prides itself on creating a family-friendly atmosphere for its Members and supporters.”
The independent Match Review Panel (MRP) deemed the incidents involving Tiago Calvano in the 23rd minute of the pre-season match between the Jets and Wellington to involve a tackle on Manny Muscat and subsequent assault on a player.
As a consequence, the MRP handed Calvano a sanction of four matches, being the one Mandatory Match Suspension plus an additional sanction of three matches.
Following the FFA-s review, the Club will continue to work through the matter internally.
Calvano is currently on leave to attend to personal matters is Brazil. He will return to training with the Jets next week.
Wellington’s suspensions were as follows:
– The incident involving Manny Muscat in or around the 23rd minute of the match which involved assault on a player. The MRP has proposed a sanction of four matches, being the one Mandatory Match Suspension plus an additional sanction of three matches.
– The incident involving Ben Sigmund in or around the 23rd minute of the match which involved assault on a player. The MRP has proposed a sanction of three matches, being the Mandatory Match Suspension plus an additional sanction of two matches.
– The incident involving Andrew Durante in or around the 63rd minute of the match which involved assault on a player. The MRP has proposed a sanction of two matches, being the Minimum Sanction for the Offence (the Mandatory Match Suspension plus the additional sanction of one match).
