Top 5: A-League Women goalscorers

Since the inception of the league in 2008, the goal has been goals. And lots of them.

Many players have arrived to the town and shone in that area, however there’s been even more local women who have thrived in front of goal.

We went back through the list to highlight to find the top five players with the best goalscoring numbers in our A-League Women’s history.

#5. Rhali Dobson – 10 goals

Originally from the Mid North Coast, Dobson was part of the very first Newcastle Jets A-League Women’s squad that finished as semi-finalists and managed to hit double digits in the scoring department.

She scored her first in 2011, and managed to nab nine others over the next six years and 59 appearances for the Club, and in that time, also featured for the Matildas.

Based locally in Newcastle, Dobson has also proven herself to be one of the best in the local Women’s Premier League with Merewether United.

#4. Arin Wright – 12 goals

Although Wright (formerly Gilliland when she first started with the Club), was typically a holding midfielder, she found no trouble at all in finding the back of the net.

The American made an instant impact upon her arrival, scoring four in her first season, which was followed with a total of six in the 2017/18 season, including a goal in our Semi Final clash.

Wright scored 12 goals over her 30 appearances and was certainly a key woman in our side in each of the three seasons she played for the Jets.

#3. Katie Stengel – 13 goals

The second American to make this list, Stengel didn’t spend a long time with the Club, but it was definitely a good time, and featured the best performances of her W-League.

She joined the side in 2017 and scored three goals from her first three matches – but she didn’t stop there.

Over the course of the season she rallied up a total of 10 goals to help us towards our second Semi Finals berth, and while she only played six games of the following season, she left us on a good note, scoring three from her last two matches.

We’ll undoubtedly remember Stengel’s performances fondly.

#2. Emily Van Egmond – 16 goals

One of our golden local girls, Emily Van Egmond, daughter of Championship winning A-League coach Gary, has spent numerous stints with the Club, and all of them have been successful and enjoyable to watch.

She made her league debut in the inaugural season when she had just turned 15, and in her third ever match, scored a double.

Her most prolific season in front of goal came in the 2014 season where she knocked six away, while she was also a critical member of the 2017/18 Semi Finalist squad.

Despite spending time playing elsewhere in the league, in the USA, Europe and now England too, Van Egmond will always hold a special place in the Club and the hearts of our fans.

#1. Tara Andrews – 39 goals

The greatest goal scorer in the history of the Newcastle Jets, Andrews has proven to be our go-to women in front of goal year, after year.

The Novocastrian started with the team back in 2009, at 15 years old, and scored in her first game as part of the starting XI.

It took her just 17 matches to hit double digits, and still in her teenage years, and she hasn’t stopped throughout her 106 game career.

She currently sits on 39 goals, but considering she’s still only 27-years-old, we expect that number to grow exponentially as she continues on creating history for the Jets.
