A first formal hit-out of the Westfield W-League pre-season awaits our women, who head south to Wagga Wagga this weekend.

Sunday afternoon’s clash with Sydney FC is their opening clash of what is a short-and-sweet four-week pre-season, and there’ll be new faces aplenty amongst the Jets ranks.

Nicki Flannery, Annabel Martin, and Lauren Allan are amongst the new faces who will be looking to earn their stripes in Jets colours ahead of our November 17 season opener against Melbourne City at No.2 Sportsground.

One woman also looking to make her mark and force her way into Craig Deans’ plans is Libby Copus-Brown.

The young midfielder featured in the league 11 times last season, coming off the bench on six occasions. She’s determined to change that this season.

“100% focused on a starting spot. I want to cement that position in the midfield, really give to the team whatever I can give,” Copus-Brown said.

“I’m really excited for this season, we’ve all been in the gym, training has been good, girls are feeling good and everyone’s happy.”

The 21-year-old played in the Northern NSW Women’s Premier League throughout the Westfield W-League off-season, a key cog in the Wallsend wheel.

The Red Devils missed the finals, but 11 goals in 17 appearances from Copus-Brown ensured the gap between her side and the finals was only three points.

With the Jets side back in training for the third week ahead of the season, the focus is wholly and solely on the Westfield W-League season ahead.

“This is probably one of the best seasons I’ve been involved in culture-wise, and I’m pretty excited for what we’re going to bring to this season,” Copus-Brown said.

“It’s very local, very young, but I think that’s something we need to use to our advantage. It’s a good feeling to have your friends around you when you’re playing, and that comes off when you’re on the field.

“We’ve proven before that we can do it [with a young squad], we’ve just got to put our mind to it and look forward to the season.”
