Craig Deans has named his leadership group ahead of the Westfield W-League 2019/20 season, and there’s a new face amongst the trio!

The two existing co-captains, Gema Simon and Cassidy Davis, will continue to share responsibilities once again this season.

The pair have almost 200 games of Westfield W-League experience between them, and both featured in the Northern NSW Women’s Premier League throughout the 2019 winter.

Simon played in the inaugural Jets Westfield W-League side back in 2008/09, and has plied her trade all over the world from South Korea to Norway.

Davis is a Newcastle junior, who has played a stunning 73 consecutive games for the Jets. She hasn’t missed a game since making her debut back in 2013.

Joining them in captaincy duties this season will be the Club’s Westfield W-League Player of the Year and two-time Cheryl Salisbury medallist, Clare Wheeler.

The industrious midfielder has made 56 appearances for the Club since making her debut as a 15-year-old back in December 2013.

A leader amongst the squad despite her young age, Craig Deans is confident that the 21-year-old will embrace the role.

“With the departure of Emily [van Egmond] from the Club, Clare was the obvious choice to step into the leadership group,” Deans said.

“Clare’s a player who rarely misses a minute for us, she’s super consistent on the park, and off the park, she’s a fantastic influence amongst the playing group.

“Add her into the mix with Gema and Cass, who are experienced players and leaders in our squad, and it bodes well for the season ahead.”
