It was a valiant effort from the Jets, but ultimately a slick Melbourne City side came out on top.
Two goals in the first half put the visitors in control, before a Katie Stengel strike brought Newcastle back into the game.
However, it was a magnificent Jasmyne Spencer goal which proved decisive and condemned the Jets to a second successive defeat.
It was the home side which had the game’s opening chance, with Emily van Egmond flicking it on for Katie Stengel. She found herself in behind, but Matildas and City ‘keeper Lydia Williams rushed the American striker and it came to nothing.
Shortly after, Jenna Kingsley had a golden chance to finish off a slick Jets move but her shot at the back post went wide.
With the warm conditions requiring a drinks break, it was a stoppage which proved beneficial for City. On the half hour mark, Yukari Kinga got in front of her defender and glanced one home to give the visitors the lead.
Newcastle hadn’t had too long to catch their breath before City doubled their lead, Tameka Butt sneaking in behind the defence to fire home.
The home side came out looking good after half-time, and had a goal to show for it when Katie Stengel fired home for her first goal of the year in the 53rd minute.
Britt Eckerstrom pulled off a fantastic save to deny City’s Jasmyne Spencer from close range on the hour mark, before an Emily van Egmond free kick went JUST over the bar.
In the 72nd minute, City had their sealer. It was a magnificent strike too – Jasmyne Spencer coming in from the left to fire across Britt Eckerstrom and give the American custodian no chance.
