W-League: Rampant Victory put Jets to sword

The Newcastle Jets have gone down to a clinical Melbourne Victory side 7-0 in their Round 13 clash at No.2 Sportsground on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors took an early lead thanks to New Zealand international Annalie Longo when she reacted quickest in the penalty area to head home in the third minute, before Longo doubled her tally in the seventh minute with a neat finish which gave Claire Coelho no chance in the Newcastle goal.

Despite the early setback, the Jets showed plenty of fight and worked their way into the match but just couldn’t find that finishing touch to get them back in the contest and on 33 minutes the Victory made them pay when they extended their lead thanks to skipper Natasha Dowie.

After a frantic scramble which saw the crossbar struck twice, Darian Jenkins found herself in the right place at the right time to make the score 4-0 in the 40th minute as the visitors held a comfortable lead at halftime.

There was little Coelho could do about the scoreline in the opening 45 minutes, but she denied the Victory extending their lead just minutes into the second half when she produced an outstanding fingertip save to deny Angie Beard, before denying Melina Ayres at point-blank range on the follow-up.

The visitors made it five just before the hour mark when Darian Jenkins added her second, heading home at the back post from a Jenna McCormick cross, before Cass Davis inadvertently deflected the ball into the back of her own net in the 69th minute.

Renee Pountney was introduced with 20 minutes remaining, and looked lively as she twice went close to reducing the deficit, but the visitors finished off the scoring in the 83rd minute when Melina Ayres headed home from a corner.

The Jets will now head to Adelaide for their final game of the season as they take on Adelaide United on Thursday evening at Marden Sports Complex.
