Fresh from a first win of the season across in Perth, the Jets returned to Newcastle looking to make it two on the bounce against the might of Sydney FC.
The might of the Sky Blues, chock full of Matildas and US internationals, threatened to prove too strong and sadly for the Jets, that’s what happened.
Goals from Remy Siemsen in the 31st and 50th minutes secured the victory for Sydney, and denied the Jets a chance to potentially move into the top four.
The visitors started strongly with a few forays into the Jets half, forcing a string of stops from Claire Coelho – the best an acrobatic tip over the bar after Teresa Polias unleashed from the deep.
Simensen struck for her first goal in the 31st minute, with the Australian striker ghosting in front of her marker to head home.
Her second of the afternoon came just a few minutes into the second half, after the striker got in between a bit of interplay at the back and finished past Claire Coelho to make it two.
With the advantage now at two, Sydney were looking for more but perhaps not as vigorously as before. They had their chances – Coelho made a fantastic stop on the hour mark to deny an Alanna Kennedy free kick.
Newcastle had a pair of chances fifteen minutes from time, with Hannah Brewer and Libby Copus-Brown both forcing the Sydney keeper to make sharp saves.
Another unlikely source – Clare Wheeler – went close again for the Jets, but Aubrey Bledsoe tipped her chance over and a goal wasn’t to be for Newcastle.
A bye awaits the Jets in Round 6, before a trip to Brisbane between Christmas and the New Year.
