The Newcastle Jets can today confirm that star midfielder, Taylor Smith has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee following the Jets Round 7 Westfield W-League clash with Perth Glory.

The American suffered the injury after falling awkwardly in the 86th minute of Saturday night’s draw in Perth.

After joining from NWSL club, Washington Spirit, Smith has been one of Newcastle’s stand-out players since arriving at the Jets.

The midfielder has played in all six of the Jets Westfield W-League matches this season, laying on a number of assists and winning the Club’s Westfield W-League Player of the Month award for November.

Newcastle Jets Westfield W-League head coach, Craig Deans said it was a big blow for all involved.

“Taylor has been key for us so far this season, and we anticipated she’d play a big role moving towards the finals series,” Deans said.

“She’s a fantastic person and it’s been great having her in the group, which makes this injury all the more upsetting.

“It’s devastating for us and for Taylor, and we’ll do everything we can to support her in recovering from this injury and getting back to her best.”
