Women's Draw: Analysing the first four matches

It’s not long until our Newcastle Jets women are back on the pitch after an awfully long off-season.

Last week, the first four rounds of the 2021/22 Women’s competition were announced and we can’t wait to get stuck into them. Here is everything you need to know about our upcoming fixtures.

Sydney FC (Round 1 - Away)

The Jets begin their campaign on the road to last year’s grand finalists, Sydney FC, in what will pose a tough test right from the word ‘go’.

Head Coach Ash Wilson has once again collated a strong team featuring several experienced heads mixed with some fresh faces and exciting talent such as Lucy Johnson and Kirsty Fenton, and fans across Northern NSW will be keen to see how the side have gelled together come Round One.

Tara

We couldn’t manage a win against The Sky Blues last season, losing 2-1 and 2-0 respectfully, but that won’t deter them.

With a strong pre-season under our belts, our new squad will be fired up to start the season on the right foot – and what better way to do that than to knock off the league heavyweights.

Wellington Phoenix (Round 2 - Home)

Our first home game of the season will come against the league’s newest side, Wellington Phoenix, making this Round Two clash a historical game for both sides.

The Phoenix will travel to the Hunter for their first away game as a club and will play at McDonald Jones Stadium in what will be a double header alongside the men, and should be a fantastic day out for the family.

Jets fans

Considering this match will be just the second in the Phoenix’s history, our girls won’t exactly know what to expect. However, we know it’ll be tough, and only our best will do when we walk out in front of the home faithful ready to cheer on the side for the first time this season.

Western Sydney Wanderers (Round 3 - Away)

We travel down to ‘Wanderland’ for our third game of the season, and it’s shaping up to be an interesting clash given the teams finished one win apiece last season.

The Wanderers secured a 2-1 win on home soil, before succumbing to a 4-1 thrashing at our No. 2 Sportsground.

Jets Wanderers

Knowing we have what it takes to win, our Jets will be determined to pick up all three points again against the Western Sydney club.

Both sides missed out on a finals birth in 2020/21, and know that it’s games like these that prove vital in the pointy end of the season.

Wellington Phoenix (Round 4 - Away)

The last match of the announced fixtures sees us meet once again with Wellington Phoenix, however this time, away from home.

It’ll be our second clash with the New Zealand side in as many weeks and with their opposition still fresh in their mind, it will no doubt make this match an intriguing encounter.

Jets Celebrate

The Phoenix have a difficult start to their first season in the competition, coming up against The Sky Blues twice in the opening rounds, and it means their home fixture against us will be one they’ll be up for.

Our girls will be weary, but will be looking to finish 2021 with the three points, and entering 2022 with a strong foundation of momentum to build on.
