Y-League: A Derby for Round 2

After a fantastic performance against Sydney to open the season but with nothing to show for it, the young Jets will make their way down to the Central Coast this Saturday.

Their opponents are the age-old enemy, Central Coast Mariners, and the travelling Jets will have to be at their best this weekend.

Y-LEAGUE REPORT: Sky Blues get it done over the Jets

They were close to that last Sunday in that Round 1 clash with Sydney FC. Creating chance after chance, Newcastle looked menacing and really should have had a goal or two to show for it.

It was a side bolstered by a swag of Hyundai A-League squad players who were building their match fitness, and the case might be so again on Saturday as the league stops for an international break.

For the Mariners, they’ll come into this match off the back of a last-gasp Round 1 win over Canberra United.

They came from behind twice, including a pair of goals in the 87th and 91st minute to claw their way back to a 3-2 victory.

Team news

Thankfully for the Jets coaching staff, there were no major injury concerns from Sunday’s loss to Sydney FC.

There were a swag of good performances across the park which will likely see a variety of players lock down their spots – the likes of Kieran Hayes and Jack Simmons were impressive.

A number of players didn’t get on the team sheet at the weekend – Tom Curran and Riley Smith among them – and those boys could be a chance on Saturday.

As always, there’s the possibility that players from the Hyundai A-League squad could play a role in the team.

Last weekend, there were four players who were in the Hyundai A-League matchday squad against Sydney who played in the FYL match on Sunday. Could they again play a part?
