Y-League: Second-half heroics see Jets romp home

A bucket of chances and some clinical finishing saw the Jets exact revenge on the Wanderers and secure a massive win over the Foxtel Y-League leaders on Thursday afternoon.

After holding a slim advantage at half-time, Labi Haliti’s side romped home with four goals in the second half to win out 5-1.

It was a side stacked with first-team players with Ivan Vujica captaining a side which featured the likes of Nick Cowburn, Mitch Austin, and Angus Thurgate.

It was Newcastle opened the scoring in just the sixth minute of play through one of those men: Nick Cowburn.

He received the ball deep inside the opposition half, drove into space, put his foot through it, and found the bottom corner of the net to put the Jets ahead.

There was another chance for the home side minutes later when Mitch Austin and Cai Tipaldo linked up nicely on the left-hand side, but the former couldn’t find the back of the net when the opportunity presented itself.

As the game evened out, chances became fewer for both sides as much of the game began to take place in the midfield. The Wanderers ventured forward on a few occasions, but didn’t do enough to present any real threat on goal.

Tipaldo let off a nice shot in the 26th minute, before Nick Cowburn went oh-so close to doubling the Jets advantage with a free-kick which stayed low and nearly snuck in.

After heading to the sheds level, it took under five minutes for the Wanderers to draw level. The goal came through Marley Peterson, who found himself in behind and steered it home nicely to make the score 1-1.

A precise Cowburn ball over the top put Tipaldo through on goal but he couldn’t beat the keeper, but Mitch Austin did just that in the 70th minute.

He was the beneficiary of a miscued shot from Kosta Petratos which bounced across the face, falling perfectly for Austin to tap home.

The Jets had a pair of chances shortly after, with both Nick Cowburn and Maki Petratos watching efforts sail JUST over the bar, but they had their third in the 81st minute.

It was a determined effort from Kosta Petratos, who lashed at the ball and fired off a heavy shot after the ball in from Austin. The keeper parried, and Petratos wrestled his way in front to fire home and make the score 3-1.

With the game winding down, the Jets took full advantage of a Wanderers side which had perhaps switched off in the final stages to score twice more.

The fourth goal of the afternoon in the 88th minute was a special one, with Jack Simmons lifting over an inch-perfect ball which Kosta Petratos chipped home to the delight of the home fans.

Mitch Austin grabbed his second just moments later, let loose down the left-hand side and sliding home a shot which the keeper got a touch to, but couldn’t stop from finding the back of the net.
