Newcastle Jets are pleased to announce exciting prospect Lucas Mauragis has signed a new two year contract.

Mauragis, a left-sided player, who signed a scholarship deal for the current season just some months ago, wasted little time impressing coach Craig Deans and the coaching staff.

“He’s made an instant impact from the moment he arrived at the Club,” Coach Craig Deans said.

“He has a lot of energy and a left foot. They’re not easy to find, left-footers.

“It’s been a big jump for him going from NPL in Canberra to the point he’s at now.

“He has plenty of development to go still. He’s only young and has made a lot of impact for us when he’s come on but there’s still a lot of improvement in him.

“I look forward to continue working with him and developing him.”

The new deal will see the 19-year-old remain in the blue and red for at least the 2021/22 and 2022/23 seasons.

A wing-back, Mauragis joined the Club from Canberra United after Jets Youth Team coach Daniel McBreen watched a YouTube highlights video of the youngster.

He then played for the Youth Team in the Foxtel Y-League 2019/20 season before making his A-League debut for the Jets late last year.

“He’s a player who has come through our youth system,” Jets Football Manager, Joel Griffiths said.

“Apart from his versatility on the park and his adapting quickly to the A-League, the thing that separates him from most others is his work ethic and mentality when in an A-League environment.

“He’s the sort of player that follows instructions well. He’s made a lot of sacrifices to get to this stage and has so much more to give as he continued with his development.”

Mauragis was recently selected in the Under 20s Young Socceroos.

According to the left-footer, the decision to re-sign was an easy one.

“The Jets have been nothing less than great to me my whole time here,” Mauragis said.

“It was a super easy decision. I didn’t have to think twice about it. I’m excited for what the future holds.”
